Being Chuck Bass in the television show Gossip Girl, he is an absolute nightmare to friends and family. But the 21 year old does have the gentleman-status in real life. STARS tried to get him with prejudices about the Brits, but the lady killer managed.
Politeness
Ed: ‘ It was very important while I was raised. I don’t know if its typical British to be polite, but if we are known at being it, I’m definitely proud of that. I grew up in middle class town just outside London. I’m the youngest out of three kids, all boys by the way. My parents both had their career, worked hard and were proud of the fact to could keep everything financially straight. Our family was known as decent and humble in the neighborhood. If we went out, we were always properly and crease-free dressed with combed hair and polished shoes. I always spoke with decency to elderly people and I still do that. I’m just well-mannered, always have been.
It was a complete culture shock to be moving to the USA for work. I am not saying my good manners faded, but I just felt different to the others. Especially when I noticed it can be harsh in the world I’m in right now. But I have to say, I’m still having a great time being here in New York!’
Conservative
‘I always find this a difficult word, because it sounds so negative. It actually means ‘old fashioned’, which I’m definitely not. My parents were never like that and they let me and my brothers make our own choices. They weren’t surprised when I told them I wanted to be an actor. They let me take acting classes at a young age, on Saturday mornings. They were never against it and never started about finishing college. I really am lucky with such modern parents. I’m actually very traditional when it comes to love. I think that – when I decide I want to get married – I have to be one getting down on one knee. Unlike some, I do attach value to this thing called marriage. My parents are living proof a marriage doesn’t have to be dull.’
Stylish
‘I wear the most weird and colorful clothes on Gossip Girl. The stylists are doing everything to get me into the suites, which all come straight from the runway. Chuck is a dandy, fashionable , a pretty little rich boy. So the suites belong with the image of a smooth guy. To wear the clothes for the show is absolutely great, but it’s not my style at all, I would feel miserable in it. I love wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Just the other day I had to do a test about fashion in an interview and afterwards the journalist told me: ‘’Ed, you are a man indeed, because you don’t know much about fashion.’’ I’m not into the latest fashion trends; I think I take good care of myself and being up-to-date dressed. Though, I am actually quite vain. I am and will always be a real man, so I will not go to a nail salon or have a pedicure. But I am careful with my body. I try to eat healthy and have a good weight. I have to, because I gain weight easily when I eat nice food.’
Family man
‘I do care a lot about family and friends. How busy I might get, I always try my best to stay in contact regularly with the people I love. Our family is very very close. If they don’t hear of me in a few days, there will always be someone swearing on my voicemail. With days like Christmas or birthdays we tend to spent it together. My parents and brother regularly come over for a week, staying at my apartment.’
Neat
‘Is being neat something that is typical British? It sure is right in my case. I’m quite thrifty with my stuff, very orderly in everything I do and I’m a control freak. Besides, I just want to know where I’m at. On the set of Gossip Girl I get teased about it. The crew has challenged me by hiding my scripts and to see if I would panic, which I didn’t. I’m such a perfectionist and I just want to do my work as good as I can. If you could see my apartment you would wonder if I have a fear of stains. Everything is super tidy, such as in my head.’
Party animal
‘I am 21 years old, live in New York and enjoy going out. There is a lot to see and to do in this city. I especially like to go to the cool and new clubs. That is the greatest part of a big city like New York and London: there is always something going on. I’d rather enjoy a Saturday night at a club where people just leave me alone than being at a red carpet event, where I get photographed and being the center of attention.’
Humor
‘British are well known for their dry sense of humor, aren’t they? I don’t know if I am funny, you should ask others. The only thing I can say is that the American humor is different. I don’t want to get into a fight with President Obama, who actually watches Gossip Girl, but I’d rather watch British comedies than American ones.’
Honesty
‘I am no sneak, I don’t put up people against other people, I don’t like to play games and I am not someone who whines about something until I get what I want. I don’t look like Chuck with that at all, manipulation has become his second nature. I’m straight with everything and I don’t have the time to gossip or spy on other people all day. Although, I have to be careful with what I say right now, because of a typical British phrase: The way to kill honesty is to insist on it and exaggerate it. The more you say it, the less you’ll be believed!’
